Learn how the length of your message changes depending on the type of characters you use
What is the starting number of available characters per message?
By default, messages can have up to 160 characters (including spaces and line breaks). At the start, Attentive will automatically account for the length of your company's name, which is included at the beginning of every message. This is why the character count starts out at less than 160 characters.
What if I add an image to my message?
If you add an image or gif to your message, it will become a multimedia message (MMS). The number of available characters will not change.
What if I use more than 160 characters?
Your message will be sent as multiple SMS messages, but will still appear to the consumer as a single message. You will be charged for each SMS message used - so if your message is 170 characters you will be charged for 2 SMS messages and so forth.
How do emojis and other special characters affect character count?
If using an emoji or certain other special characters (including − ° ‘ « · ½ ¢ © ® ¶ ± ×) the default number of characters allowed in your message will drop from 160 down to 70. If your message is now over 70 characters, it will send as additional SMS messages but will still appear to the consumer as a single message. You will be charged for extra SMS messages.
