Heads up: this article details how to build and edit email templates in a triggered email journey, and assumes that you’re familiar with both other journeys in Attentive and triggered email journeys. Before proceeding, you may want to check out the following:

You should know

  • If you’re using brand styles for sign-up units, they won’t automatically be applied to the email template builder. However, if you have access to triggered email journeys, then we’ve already built an email template for your brand.
  • You must include both the {unsubscribeLink} and the {companyAddresss} personalizations in all of your email templates in order to be compliant. Manually adding the address of your company instead of using the personalizations will not work.

Edit an email template

  1. After you add an email step to a journey, click the Send email step in the journey map.
    j-trig-editor-click-step.png
    The Send email panel opens.
  2. Check to make sure that the From name and From email address fields are accurate. If you haven’t already, add a subject line for your email, and then click Design.
    j-trig-editor-design-button.png
    The email content editor opens.
    j-trig-editor-the-editor.png
  3. Edit your email template. See How the email template editor works for more details on each of the options. When you’re finished, preview your email template, and then click Save and return to journey in the upper-right corner of the screen.

Preview an email template

You can see a preview of your email template from within the template builder, and you can also send a preview email to yourself.

You should use both types of preview before launching a triggered email journey.

To see a preview of an email template:

  1. From within the email content editor, click Preview.

    The email preview screen opens.

  2. From here, you can:
    1. Click the Device toggle to preview the template on mobile and desktop devices.

    2. Send a test email. You can send the test to more than one email address. After each address, press Enter. Click Send when you’re ready.

  3. When you’re finished, click Exit preview.

How the email template editor works

The journey email editor is a drag and drop email editor. The editor has two main sections:

j-trig-editor-overview.png

  • The Content editor, where you can add, edit, and remove content from your template.
  • The Content / Rows / Settings panel, where you can add content blocks, rows, and change the settings for your template.

When you find a piece of content you want to include in an email, drag it from the Content tab and drop it where you want it to appear in your email template.

When you drag a piece of content onto the content editor, the content is placed in the row where you see Drag it here.

Each piece of content you add -- like an image, a button, or some text -- lives inside of a row. The email template is a series of rows stacked on top of each other. You can add multiple pieces of content to each row. You can identify individual rows by hovering over the left or right side of the template:

The email template editor has many options for customizing your email template. You can customize the font, font size, images used, the way buttons appear, and much more. Below, you can learn how to:

Add personalization to a template

You can improve the performance of your triggered emails by adding personalization to them. Personalization adds subscriber-specific details to your content, like their name and the product they viewed or added to a cart. For more, check out Add personalization to an email template.

Add a row to a template

The default row in the email editor is full width, but you can choose a different row type if you want to add pieces of content next to each other.

To add a new row to your template, drag a row from the Rows tab into the email template.

Move rows and content

You can move both rows and content by clicking and dragging with the Move icon j-trig-editor-crossblock.png. Note that rows and content are dragged and dropped from and to different places:

  • Move a row: Hover over either side of the email body, but not in the body of the template. When you drop the row, drop it on the side of the email body.

  • Move a piece of content: Hover directly over the piece of content in the body of the template. When you drop the content, drop it within the email body.

Unlike rows, you can drag a piece of content from one row to another.

Add content to an email template

You can add many types of content to an email template. After you add a piece of content, click on the content to see its options.

Content options include:

  • Title: A title for your email. You can change the font, weight, color, and more. Clicking title content also opens a small text style editor.

  • Text: Body text for your email. You can change the font, weight, color, and more. Clicking text content also opens a small text style editor.

  • Image: Upload an image to include in your email.
  • Button: A call to action button for your email. You can change the font, weight, color, and more. Clicking button content also opens a small text style editor.

  • Divider: A horizontal line that divides two pieces of content or two rows.
  • Social: Add social media links to your email. You can change the social media icons, the button URLs, and more.
  • Menu: Add a dropdown menu to your email with links to websites, send an email, or send a text message.

Delete a piece of content or a row

You can delete both rows and content by first clicking on the row or content, and then clicking the Trash icon j-trig-editor-trashcan.png. Note that you select a row or a piece of content to delete in different ways:

  • Delete a row: Click the row you want to delete on either side of the email body, but not in the body itself.

  • Delete a piece of content: Click the piece of content in the body of the email template.

Edit email template settings

You can change the settings for your entire email template from the Settings tab. Options include:

  1. Content area width: The width of your email content in an email inbox.

  2. Content area alignment: The alignment of the content area in an email inbox. Centered by default.
  3. Background color: The background color for your email template.
  4. Content area background color: The background color for the content area of your email template.
  5. Default font: The default font for each title and text content in your template. Note that you can set the default font to one font, and change individual pieces of content to have a different font.
  6. Link color: The color of unclicked links in your template.

Undo, redo, and restore earlier versions

If you made a mistake while designing your email template, click the Undo button in the lower-left corner of the content editor. You can also click the Redo button to restore (or delete) any content changed by the Undo button.

You can also restore earlier versions of your template by clicking the Timeline button in the lower-left corner of the editor, and then clicking which version you’d like to restore.
